Statement
As a former award-winning journalist from China, I tell stories about gender, immigration and language by spinning paper yarn, dyeing with plants, and weaving on a handloom.Through labor-intensive processes, I explore hidden emotions, struggles, and perseverance with distinctive figurative weaving. I incorporate natural fibers such as linen, paper collage, and hand-spun paper yarn made from calligraphy paper and book pages.
I investigate through research and experiments with materials, their connection to the human body, to make visible the internal human struggle for existence and our interactions with the world around us. Repeatedly crumpled and smoothed-out handmade mulberry paper bears fine wrinkles reminiscent of human skin. Colors extracted from plants capture the subtle vibrations of nature, while handwoven cloth records the body’s movement and the passage of time.
