Statement
As a former award-winning journalist from China, I tell stories of migration, memory, and identity by weaving on a hand-loom, dyeing with plants, hand-spinning, and papermaking. Through these labor-intensive processes, I explore hidden emotions, internal struggles, and perseverance using figurative weaving.
My woven paintings and installations combine natural fibers, paper-fabric collage, and hand-spun paper yarn, often recycling carefully selected books, calendars, calligraphy paper, and other text-based materials as cultural and historical references. Through experiments with material and form, I reflect on my personal path as a woman and immigrant with a multilingual and multicultural background, while also responding to broader social themes of justice, marginalization, and displacement.
My process is slow and tactile: weaving row by row on a hand loom, crumpling and smoothing paper repeatedly to create fine wrinkles similar to skin, and dyeing with plants rooted in specific traditions. These materials and processes allow my work to register physical and emotional labor, movement, and time.
